PRP for Headache Relief

A Regenerative Approach to Chronic Headache & Migraine Management

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is an emerging regenerative treatment that may help reduce certain types of chronic headaches by addressing inflammation, irritated nerves, damaged soft tissue, and musculoskeletal dysfunction rather than simply masking symptoms with medication.

While PRP is not a cure for headaches, it may provide meaningful relief for carefully selected patients whose pain originates from the muscles, fascia, ligaments, joints, or nerves of the head and neck.

What is PRP?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is created from a small sample of your own blood. The blood is processed to concentrate platelets, which contain powerful growth factors and proteins that support healing, reduce inflammation, and stimulate tissue repair.

Once prepared, the PRP is injected into targeted areas contributing to your headache pain.

Because PRP is derived from your own blood, it is a natural treatment with minimal risk of allergic reaction.

How Can PRP Help Headaches?

Many chronic headaches are caused by underlying inflammation or injury involving:

  • Neck muscles
  • Upper cervical ligaments
  • Tendons
  • Fascial tissues
  • Occipital nerves
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ)

PRP works by promoting the body's natural healing response. The concentrated growth factors help:

  • Reduce chronic inflammation
  • Support healing of injured tissues
  • Improve blood flow
  • Strengthen weakened ligaments
  • Calm irritated nerves
  • Improve stability of the upper cervical spine

As healing occurs, many patients experience fewer headaches, decreased pain intensity, and improved daily function.

Conditions That May Benefit

PRP may be considered for patients experiencing:

  • Chronic Migraines
  • Occipital Neuralgia
  • Cervicogenic Headaches
  • Chronic Tension Headaches
  • TMJ-Related Headaches
  • Post-Traumatic Headaches

Potential Benefits

Patients may experience:

  • Fewer headache days
  • Reduced headache severity
  • Less dependence on pain medications
  • Improved neck mobility
  • Better sleep
  • Improved concentration
  • Enhanced quality of life
  • Long-lasting symptom improvement

Results develop gradually as the body heals over several weeks to months.

What to Expect

Your visit typically includes:

  1. Comprehensive evaluation to identify the source of your headaches.
  2. Blood draw to obtain a small sample.
  3. Processing of the PRP using a specialized centrifuge.
  4. Targeted injections into the identified treatment areas.
  5. Return to most normal activities within one to two days, with temporary soreness at the injection site being common.

Some patients require a series of treatments depending on the chronicity and severity of their symptoms.

Is PRP Right for You?

PRP may be an option if you:

  • Experience chronic headaches despite conservative treatment
  • Want to reduce reliance on medications
  • Have neck-related headache pain
  • Have occipital neuralgia
  • Have persistent headaches following injury
  • Prefer a regenerative, minimally invasive treatment approach

A comprehensive medical evaluation is essential to determine whether your headaches are likely to respond to PRP therapy.

Who Is Not a Candidate for PRP?

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is a safe treatment for many people, but it may not be appropriate if you have certain medical conditions or take specific medications.

PRP may not be recommended if you have:

  • An active infection
  • A bleeding disorder or low platelet count
  • Blood cancers or active cancer
  • Severe anemia
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Are taking blood-thinning medications (such as Warfarin)
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

A thorough medical evaluation will be completed before treatment to determine if PRP is a safe and appropriate option for you.

What Does the Evidence Say?

Research on PRP for headache disorders is still evolving. Early studies and clinical experience suggest PRP may benefit certain patients—particularly those with occipital neuralgia, cervicogenic headaches, or headaches related to musculoskeletal dysfunction. However, larger, high-quality clinical trials are still needed, and PRP is not currently considered a standard treatment for migraine. The best candidates are those whose headache source can be identified as involving injured or inflamed soft tissues, joints, or peripheral nerves.

A Natural Approach to Lasting Relief

Rather than temporarily masking symptoms, PRP focuses on supporting your body's natural healing process by targeting the underlying tissues contributing to headache pain. If chronic headaches are affecting your quality of life, a personalized evaluation can help determine whether regenerative medicine may be an appropriate part of your treatment plan.

Botox® for Chronic Migraine Relief

Reduce Headache Days. Improve Quality of Life.

For individuals living with chronic migraines, frequent headaches can interfere with work, family life, and everyday activities. Unlike medications taken during a migraine attack, Botox® is used as a preventive treatment to help decrease the frequency and severity of migraines before they begin.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is a purified protein that temporarily blocks the release of certain chemicals involved in pain transmission. When injected into specific muscles of the head and neck, it helps reduce the activation of pain pathways associated with chronic migraines.

Treatment takes approximately 15–20 minutes and is performed in the office with minimal downtime.

Who Is a Candidate?

Botox® is FDA-approved for adults who experience:

  • Chronic migraine, defined as 15 or more headache days per month, with at least 8 days having migraine features, for more than 3 months.
  • Migraines that have not responded well to lifestyle changes or preventive medications.
  • Frequent migraines that significantly affect daily activities or quality of life.

Botox® is not approved for occasional headaches, tension headaches, or episodic migraines (fewer than 15 headache days per month), although your healthcare provider can discuss other treatment options if those apply.

Botox may not be recommended if you:

  • Have an allergy to botulinum toxin or any ingredients in Botox.
  • Have an active skin infection at the planned injection sites.
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding (safety has not been well established).
  • Have certain neuromuscular disorders, including:
    • Myasthenia gravis
    • Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome
    • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Have difficulty swallowing or significant breathing problems, as Botox can rarely worsen these conditions.
  • Are taking medications that may increase the effects of Botox, such as certain aminoglycoside antibiotics or muscle relaxants.
  • Have a history of severe allergic reactions to botulinum toxin products.

How Does Botox® Help?

Botox® works by interrupting pain signals before they reach the brain. It may help:

  • Reduce the number of migraine days each month
  • Decrease migraine severity
  • Shorten the duration of migraine attacks
  • Reduce sensitivity to light and sound
  • Improve daily function and productivity
  • Decrease the need for rescue medications

Many patients notice continued improvement after multiple treatment cycles.

Treatment Areas

Botox® is injected into specific muscles following an established treatment protocol that typically includes:

  • Forehead
  • Temples
  • Back of the head
  • Neck
  • Upper shoulders

A typical treatment involves 31 small injections across 7 muscle groups, although additional injections may be recommended based on your symptoms.

When Will I Feel Results?

Most patients begin to notice improvement within 2 to 4 weeks after treatment.

Maximum benefit often develops after the second or third treatment session.

Treatments are typically repeated every 12 weeks to maintain results.

Benefits of Botox® for Chronic Migraine

Many patients experience:

  • Fewer migraine days each month
  • Reduced headache intensity
  • Less reliance on pain medications
  • Improved sleep
  • Better concentration
  • Increased participation in work and family activities
  • Improved overall quality of life

Individual results vary, and not every patient responds to treatment.

Possible Side Effects

Botox® is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects include:

  • Temporary injection-site discomfort
  • Neck pain
  • Mild headache after treatment
  • Temporary eyelid drooping
  • Muscle weakness near the injection site

Serious side effects are uncommon, but can occur. Your healthcare provider will review your medical history to determine whether Botox® is appropriate for you.

What Does the Evidence Say?

Botox® has been extensively studied in large clinical trials and is FDA-approved for the prevention of chronic migraine. Studies have shown that many patients experience a meaningful reduction in monthly headache days and improved quality of life when treated every 12 weeks as part of a comprehensive migraine management plan.
